One of my greatest long-term interests has been studying the past, and more particularly - Archaeology. Television programmes about archaeology have always attracted my interest, but it was the legendary BBC Radio 4 series ORIGINS that really captured my attention and imagination. When I was a teenager, I joined my local group down in Worthing in West Sussex - Worthing Archaeological Society. My first ever dig was in the small, but ancient hamlet of Tarring in West Worthing. I was hooked! On moving up to London, one of the first things I did was seek out COLAS, the City of London Archaeological Society. During the archaeological boom period of the 1980s in the City, I had a truly wonderful time with COLAS working along side professional archaeologists from the Museum of London's Department of Urban Archaeology (DUA), now the Museum of London Archaeological Service (MoLAS). Most notable were the great Thames Waterfront sites, where 1st century Roman quay were the dominant feature. Sometimes there survived in almost perfect condition, undisturbed for 1900 years. It was like being in a 3D time machine! I also became a member of the London & Middlesex Archaeological Society (LAMAS), whose excellent publications and Transactions provided the backbone for my London archaeological research reading. I also joined the British Archaeological Trust (RESCUE), with whom I am proud to serve as a Council Member, working on the publicity and web site. |
